Hydraulic control / practical guide

How to select a hydraulic directional control valve

What information is needed to choose a Komtes hydraulic control valve?

Start with the machine’s controlled functions, pump and circuit arrangement, flow and pressure requirements, available space, port connections and control method. Compare the Komtes platform drawings for the required spool count, then confirm the complete operating specification with the technical team.

01 / 1. List the controlled functions

1. List the controlled functions

Write down each machine movement and how the operator should control it. The documented Komtes range covers one-to-seven-spool assemblies. Each spool has a numbered A/B work-port pair; spool count describes controlled functions, not the total number of fluid connections.

Include whether functions must operate together and what should happen when a control returns to neutral. Supply the hydraulic circuit or a marked machine diagram where possible. The function list is more useful than choosing a model solely from a familiar external shape.

02 / 2. Define the circuit and working conditions

2. Define the circuit and working conditions

Provide pump delivery, the flow required by each function, working and peak pressures, the intended relief setting and return-line conditions. The return circuit includes downstream restrictions such as the filter; it must be considered alongside the inlet and work-port requirements.

Also identify the hydraulic fluid, seal requirements, temperature range and operating viscosity. Model numbers are not flow ratings, and a pressure-test value would not establish a continuous working-pressure limit. Komtes must confirm the operating limits of the selected assembly.

03 / 3. Check the selected assembly drawing

3. Check the selected assembly drawing

Compare KM50 and KM80 monoblock construction with the KM110 sectional architecture. Open the technical guide for the required family and spool count. Check the complete width, height, depth and port positions rather than inferring fit from the pitch alone.

Dimensions include the manual levers as noted in the guides. Allow for the actual fitting arrangement, hose routing, control movement and access within the machine. The public 3D model is an exterior presentation; it is not a manufacturing model or a substitute for the dimensional drawing.

04 / 4. Confirm the connections and controls

4. Confirm the connections and controls

Specify P, T and A/B threads separately, together with the intended sealing and mating-fitting arrangement. Alternative sizes in the documentation describe options to confirm. The KM50-4 T-port callout needs particular attention because it differs from the other six KM50 drawings.

Describe the required actuation and spool behaviour. Product references or control codes should be confirmed with the technical team rather than treated as complete circuit definitions. Include the exact model, spool count and drawing with the enquiry to reduce ambiguity.

05 / 5. Prepare a technical enquiry

5. Prepare a technical enquiry

Use the checklist below to organise a request for quotation or a technical discussion. It contains application inputs, not published product ratings. Attach the machine circuit, installation constraints and the selected Komtes drawing, and identify any requirement that is still undecided.

Before ordering, ask Komtes to confirm the proposed platform, spool count, connection options, controls and operating specification together. Keeping that confirmation with the machine documentation helps the installer work from the same agreed configuration.

Application inputs to confirm with Komtes · not product ratings
RequirementInformation to provide
Flow requirementSpecify pump delivery and the flow required by each controlled function, in l/min.
Working pressureProvide normal working pressure, peak pressure and the required relief setting, in bar.
Return-line conditionsSpecify maximum T-port back pressure, including the return filter and any downstream components.
Circuit arrangementConfirm pump type, neutral condition, simultaneous functions and any carry-over connection.
Fluid & sealsIdentify the hydraulic fluid and required seal compatibility.
Temperature & viscosityProvide the fluid temperature range, ambient conditions and operating viscosity.
